Adventures in TikTok land

Some of us at Abundant Housing Vancouver, and other urbanist friends, have been talking for years about making short form video content as a way to reach new people, but never really got around to it. But Twitter isn’t as fun as it used to be, and while Bluesky is great I’m still looking for new ways to talk housing and urbanism with new people, so I decided to give TikTok a try…and I’m liking it! I’m still learning a lot, but I’m enjoying trying to come up with ways of spreading pro-housing and pro-urbanism ideas in quick and fun videos.

Since I can embed videos on here so people can watch them easily without an account, I thought I’d share a few of my recent favourites.

(If you like these (or want to hate watch ’em, it’s all the same to the algo!), I usually cross post them at my TikTok, Instagram, and Youtube accounts–pick yer poison.)

This one was inspired by the trend of having Gen Z employees write ad copy to be delivered by boomers. It didn’t get a huge amount of views but I had fun writing it:

I struggled a bit with whether to do a video about this horrific car crash near my home, but I’m glad I did–it sparked some good discussion.

This one also got a lot of reaction, and is the sort of thing that convinces me that there is an appetite out there for people to learn more about how and why our city looks the way it does–and why we have such a severe housing shortage. I’m going to do a follow up video soon on housing options in low density areas.

Vancouver needs to break the cycle of the planning that created our housing crisis–and that includes legalizing more housing options by parks! vancouver yvr housing housingcrisis yimby

This was promoting AHV’s last walking tour, but I was playing around with just acting up and getting a bit silly–I’m more than willing to embrace a bit of cringe in the name of housing advocacy!
