Stephen Quinn had me on to talk about some updates to the Broadway Plan that happened in December 2024, and it gave me a great opportunity to talk about some key ideas. Here’s a clip; the full interview is here.
He introduced Abundant Housing Vancouver as a “pro-density” group, which isn’t how I see things at all. We’re pro-housing. In my master’s thesis, I tried to summarize this key housing value, what I called the principle of abundant housing, as follows:
The legal institutions regulating property should, in a given area, support housing in sufficient quantity to meet housing demand in that area.
In other words: there should be enough housing for everyone. This seems like a simple enough idea, but it’s directly contrary to how we actually plan and approve and housing.
