From the archives: a clip from the Early Edition with Stephen Quinn (Dec 12, 2024) re the Broadway Plan

Stephen Quinn had me on to talk about some updates to the Broadway Plan that happened in December 2024, and it gave me a great opportunity to talk about some key ideas. Here’s a clip; the full interview is here.

He introduced Abundant Housing Vancouver as a “pro-density” group, which isn’t how I see things at all. We’re pro-housing. In my master’s thesis, I tried to summarize this key housing value, what I called the principle of abundant housing, as follows:

The legal institutions regulating property should, in a given area, support housing in sufficient quantity to meet housing demand in that area.

In other words: there should be enough housing for everyone. This seems like a simple enough idea, but it’s directly contrary to how we actually plan and approve and housing.
