My Speech Supporting the Vancouver Villages Plan

Vancouver’s Villages Plan would legalize low-rise apartments (4 floor strata, 6 floor rental) across 17 “villages” across Vancouver. The plan has its flaws, but it’s a meaningful step in the right direction: legalizing low-rise, small-lot apartments on quiet, off-arterial streets, and fostering walkable mixed-use neighbourhoods.

That’s why I spoke to city council to support it. Here’s my full speech:

I support the Vancouver Villages Plan because the planning status quo has failed. I grew up in Kerrisdale, where the population has stayed flat since I was born, even as Metro Vancouver’s population doubled. We need to legalize low-rise apartments on quiet, off-arterial streets in walkable neighbourhoods across our city. I also live-posted much of the public hearing. Here’s a link to my thread for the third night, you can follow the quote-posts to get to the first night:

Day 3 of the Vancouver Villages Plan is starting up. Here's a live update of how it's going:(As before, I'll be listening but not posting on every speaker—too much psychic damage.)bsky.app/profile/pwal…
